Chapter 33: Angelika

Sod it. Out of all the people on this island, I’ve been lumbered with Connor. The child from hell. When Jonah found me at the pool bar, minding my own business and enjoying an ice-cold gin and tonic, he begged me to take his son off his hands so he could go into town and find out what was going on with Timothy. I blushed at that because, since his sudden arrest, many of the hotel guests have already tried and convicted Timothy of the crime of murder after witnessing him kicking his child in the head in the hotel lobby. I did imply that Sam might be a better choice, as she’s into kids in a way I’m not — not that I said so — but Jonah winced and murmured something about Sam being too preoccupied with assisting Nathan.

How could I say no after that? He was in a fix and required my assistance. He has asked for help before, so this is not the first time he’s sought me out. Only yesterday Jonah asked to speak to me in private. He was after a huge favour and wanted to transfer a sum of money into my bank account for safekeeping. He assured me that everything was legal and that he wasn’t attempting to avoid paying taxes or anything like that when he noticed the hesitation on my face. However, he went on to confide that he had received a tip-off someone was trying to defraud his bank account.

Since I saw no harm in this, I consented and provided him with my details, I reasoned, why not do a favour for a fellow hotel guest? Even so, I kept this from Bartosz since I knew he would not have approved. When I discovered that a quarter of a million English pounds had been transferred into my account, I was really taken aback. What the hell? No wonder Jonah decided to trust a stranger rather than a friend back home. He clearly had something to hide. Ill-gotten gains maybe?

Worried that I might be implicated in some way, I wanted to confront Jonah about this when he approached me at the bar, but he was so upset over Timothy’s arrest that I didn’t have the heart to do that to him. Instead, I agreed to mind Connor, insisting that we had a proper conversation about the money when Jonah returned. Because he nodded as if there was no issue, this calmed me down. Thus, I find myself at Jonah and Timothy’s hotel suite, watching Connor as he destroys the Lego rainbow that I painstakingly constructed for him on the living room floor. Flashes of red, orange and yellow plastic fly everywhere. I flinch at the thought of stepping barefoot on those painful plastic edges.

‘Lego is for small kids,’ Connor angrily protests, sweeping away everything in his path with a clenched fist. He has felt tip all over his face and is wearing a toy Indian headdress. When I scowl at him, he gives me a cautious sidelong glance, as though he’s still not sure about me.
